The Big Move

Saturday, July 29th was the day of the big move. Having closed on our new pad with seconds to spare at the end of the day Friday, Paul and I moved from the one bed, one bath love-shack in Evanston to the 3 bed, 2 bath family-size duplex in Lincoln Square. We woke up Saturday at 6:00am, fueled up at Dunkin Donuts and went over to the new pad to stock the fridge with water for the movers, turn on the central air (one of the many perks of the new place!) and move some of the lighter items. We made two trips with clothes, jewelry, shoes, fly fishing rods, food and my giant wicker fish, before the movers arrived.

The movers showed up at 1:00 in the afternoon and having orchestrated the packing, good will drop offs, address change, utility transfer and cleaning effort, I felt perfectly comfortable supervising the movers from the comfort of our air conditioned apartment. Paul did not. I don't know if it was because we were paying them $140 an hour or what, but Paul wrapped furntire, got on the moving truck, inserted himself in the assembly line passing boxes down the stairs and staged all the heavy items near the back door. He probably would have driven over to the new place in the cab of the moving truck if there had been room. The movers told Paul they never had a customer who worked as hard as he did. At the end of the day they offered him a job - he declined. The weather in Chicago Saturday, 99 degrees (with a "feels like" temprature of 101), 80% humidity and a UV index of 10.
